“Suspicious” death at Vanderbilt Mansion: photo of body released, police ask public to help identify

Two men were arrested after one of them fell 100 feet into a silo while trespassing at an abandoned cement plant in Catskill, according to State Police.

On the night of August 1, 2025, Lucas Marrello, 21, of Cambridge, and Luke H. Apy, 23, of Malta, allegedly entered the off-limits property of the Lehigh Cement Plant on Route 9W. Police said the pair breached a perimeter fence before climbing to the top of one of the site’s cement silos. While exploring, Apy removed a piece of plywood covering an opening at the top of the structure and fell approximately 100 feet into the silo.

Though Apy remained conscious after the fall, he was trapped and unable to exit on his own. Troopers from the State Police Catskill barracks, along with emergency personnel, responded to the scene around 10:26pm. Rescue teams, including the Twin Cloves Technical Rescue Team, successfully extricated him from the silo. He was evaluated at the scene by Catskill EMS and then transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment.

Marrello was arrested at the scene and charged with third-degree criminal trespass, a Class B misdemeanor. He was processed by State Police Catskill and released on an appearance ticket for Catskill Town Court on September 4.

On August 3, Apy reported to State Police Catskill, where he was also arrested and charged with the same offense. He was released with a court appearance scheduled for the same date.

The emergency response included assistance from the Centerville Fire District, City of Kingston Fire, Cedar Grove Fire Company, Catskill EMS, Greene County Medics, Catskill Fire Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and Malden West Camp Fire Station Company.
