Ulster County has introduced Project SAFE (Special Alert for Emergencies), a new initiative aimed at improving emergency response for individuals with cognitive or developmental conditions, such as autism, Down syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as those who are blind or deaf. The program allows families, caregivers or individuals to voluntarily provide key personal and behavioral information to be stored in the county’s 911 dispatch system.
When a person registered with Project SAFE is involved in an emergency, dispatchers and responders are alerted through a dedicated icon in the computer-aided dispatch system. This advance notice helps first responders approach situations with better preparation, improving safety and reducing the risk of escalation for vulnerable individuals.
Enrollment in the program is open through an online form, and outreach efforts include in-person registration opportunities at the Ulster County Fair’s ThinkDifferently Tent.
