On June 6, at approximately 1:52pm, Lloyd Police were alerted by a 911 dispatcher to a man on the Highland side of the Mid-Hudson Bridge who appeared to be contemplating a jump into the Hudson River. As officers approached the scene, the man leapt from the span, falling roughly 135 feet into the water.
Bridge workers witnessed the incident and directed responding officers to the man’s parked vehicle. Simultaneously, the City of Poughkeepsie Police and Fire Departments were contacted and quickly mobilized. Firefighters from the City of Poughkeepsie launched their jet boat, Marine One, from Shadows Marina and located the individual in the river, floating southward with the current. He was pulled aboard the boat roughly 20 minutes after the initial report.
The man, a Dutchess County resident, was conscious but initially combative with rescuers as they attempted to bring him ashore. He later calmed down and was secured to a stretcher at Waryas Park, where several onlookers observed the scene. An Empress ambulance transported him to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for evaluation.
The rescue effort involved a coordinated response from multiple agencies, including Lloyd Police, City of Poughkeepsie Police and Fire Departments, the State Police aviation and marine units, and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office marine unit, which happened to be in the area for training.
