In Kingston, the Leonard and Vera Van Dyke Apartments (previously named Stuyvesant Charter Apartments) has been the site of gang violence and a number of shootings over the years. Two separate shootings have occurred there in the last several months.
Earlier this month, a Kingston man was arrested and charged with the most recent of the shootings. Now police say they’ve captured a suspect in the other shooting which is alleged to have occurred in December of last year. Poughkeepsie resident Edwin S. Johnson, 34 was arrested for the incident after an investigation that spanned months.
Johnson is alleged to have fired shots at a residence and vehicle in the low-income apartment complex on December 8, 2024 at approximately 12:25 a.m. He was charged with and issued a warrant for reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon only four days after the alleged shooting. However, the suspect could not be found, and he was suspected of leaving the state. A grand jury then issued indictments, which allowed U.S. Marshalls to assist in the manhunt. Johnson was subsequently taken in by Marshalls in Florida in April, and has been transported by police back to Ulster County Jail where he now sits without bail.
