Memorial Day is a fun, relaxing time — but don’t relax so much you create an unsafe traffic situation.
New York State Police will increase patrols statewide from May 23 to 26, 2025, to target impaired and reckless driving during Memorial Day weekend. Supported by Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee grants, the initiative includes sobriety checkpoints and the use of both marked and unmarked vehicles.
Memorial Day is a peak travel period, and police aim to reduce risks on the road. In 2023, alcohol-related crashes caused 236 deaths and over 3,400 injuries. Last year’s holiday weekend saw 225 impaired driving arrests and nearly 11,000 tickets issued, with no fatalities reported.
Drivers are encouraged to use the “Have a Plan” app to find safe transportation, designate drivers, and report unsafe behavior.
