The much-anticipated opening day of the Saugerties Farmers Market will mark the beginning of its vibrant 24th season on Saturday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This bustling market will take place at the picturesque location of 115 Main Street in the Cahill School parking lot, setting the stage for a delightful community gathering.
On this special day, attendees can explore an array of 27 local vendors showcasing a tapestry of fresh, locally-sourced foods and exquisite handmade crafts. The market promises an inviting atmosphere filled with the rich aromas and vibrant colors of seasonal produce, artisanal products and unique treasures.
The day will kick off with a heartfelt ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m., presided over by local officials and esteemed members of the Saugerties Farmers Market Committee. Peggy Schwartz, the dynamic vice chair of the Saugerties Chamber of Commerce, is proudly sponsoring the season. This year’s opening day will also include a poignant tribute to Barry Benepe, a visionary co-founder of the market and a trailblazer behind the Greenmarket initiative in New York City since 1976. His revolutionary idea of linking local farmers directly to consumers inspired a nationwide revival of farmers markets, aiding in the preservation of farmland while ensuring access to high-quality food.
In collaboration with the dedicated Tamayo family, specifically Rickie and Jimmy Tamayo of the beloved Tamayo Café, Benepe played a crucial role in establishing the Saugerties market in 2001. They garnered enthusiastic support from passionate community members, including talented local artist Nancy Campbell and renowned baker Connie Bailey of Hudson Valley Bakery. Today, after 24 remarkable years, the Saugerties Farmers Market continues to flourish, serving as a cornerstone of the community.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 24, visitors can enjoy live music organized by Danielle DeCicco featuring Shinedown from the Saugerties Rock Academy. Families are invited to engage in creativity at the kids’ art corner, facilitated by local artist Anita Barbour, where young ones can immerse themselves in a fun and inspiring art project.

For those looking to enjoy a scrumptious bite, the market café will offer a variety of delicious lunch options, while Bina’s Café will tempt taste buds with its unique fusion of Pakistani and Mexican cuisines — a perfect culinary adventure for adventurous food lovers.
This season will also introduce an exciting lineup of new vendors, including Coleman’s Catch and Seafood, which will specialize in the freshest seafood and innovative prepared dishes, alongside the Greater Things Roaster, enticing guests with an array of thrilling coffee options.
Other vendors include: Sustainable Sorcerers, Thistledown Farm, Krupa Brothers, Patchwork Farm, Diane Carlson of Greene Earth Farm, John and Jean Wais of J&J Farm, Alex Paris of Maynard Orchard and Farms, Karen Cohen of Nosh Woodstock, Whitecliff Vineyard, Cooper’s Daughter, Left Bank Ciders, Our Daily Bread, Crumble + Melt, Pogliani Essentials, Cedar Ridge Nursery, Margot’s House Plants, Catskill Mountain Lavender, Peace Love & Jerky Treats, Joyous Garden, Kakes a la Kim, Kiki B Design Studio, Mina Saffron, Sky Stone Studios, Amber Maxfield Design, Flowering Sun Ecology Center, Gnome Apothecary, Liquid Fables, Need to Knead, Pickle Princess and Skincare Republic.
Taking the reins as the new market manager is Vera Kamen, a passionate resident of the Village of Saugerties, who brings her culinary expertise to her new role. She will be warmly supported by Carmen Dumont, a seasoned market manager, as they both work diligently to create a vibrant and welcoming shopping experience.
