This Sunday, May 18, at 4pm, fortunate attendees gathered at Bernadette’s Bistro in the Stockade will witness the book launch for The Cloud Intern, the debut novel of Kingston resident David Greenwood.
Published by Under the BQE, a sort of small press asylum based in Brooklyn and run by artistically inclined inmates since 2023, authors published from the year previous choose the authors to be published the next year, and so on.
In Greenwood’s novel, Chris Curtis, an out-of-touch tech-industry lord, accompanies the reader on a voyage through the clouds on the equivalent of a gas-filled oligarch’s yacht floating high above an earth.
Set in a plausible future infested by a ubiquitous and self-regarding technology, Curtis appears to have arrived at his lofty position as the result of who he knew more than any real innate characteristics of competence.
His spatial relationship with the earth below and the society living there, is both a literal and metaphorical measure of the man’s proximity to a world that might be on fire and his place in it.
Sunday’s offsite event is put on by Rough Draft bar & books and the author will no doubt be forced to explain himself in front of an audience. Novelist and editor, Jenny Offill will draw Greenwood out in conversation. Greenwood has also promised to sign books.
