The Arts Society of Kingston (ASK) is urgently raising $20,000 to cover the remaining cost of a $25,000 emergency plumbing repair at its historic arts center in the Rondout neighborhood of Kingston. The problem stems from a deteriorated lead water pipe beneath the building, which was discovered in early May after water began leaking into the foundation and a nearby alley.
The leak, connected to a supply line from the city main, has created a serious health and safety risk. ASK leaders say the work — beyond the scope of volunteers — must begin immediately and requires professional contractors.
So far, $5,000 has been raised, but without the full amount, the nonprofit warns the damage could jeopardize its future. ASK has consulted with government agencies, but no public funding is available for the repair.
In addition to the pipe replacement, ASK faces other costly infrastructure needs, including a potential $100,000 upgrade to its HVAC system. Plans include a cold-climate heat pump powered by a rooftop solar array to improve energy efficiency and lower long-term costs.
