Iconic orchestral works and a bit of improvisational flair are on offer in Woodstock this weekend. The concert opens with two seasonal odes: Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, famed for its rustic charm and the beloved “Simple Gifts” melody, followed by Frederick Delius’ serene tone-poem On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring. Jazz then takes center stage with a vibrant arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to West Side Story, channeling the musical’s lively mix of Broadway, salsa, and cool jazz vibes. Capping off the night, Woodstock Symphony Orchestra principal bassist Lou Pappas and friends will dive into the art of jazz improvisation.
