The City of Kingston has received a $1.6-million state grant to plant 8100 trees across 72 acres of five public parks. Announced by governor Kathy Hochul on Arbor Day, the last Friday in April, the community reforestation money’s purpose is to establish and expand resilient forests in and near New York’s urban communities. Total grants of $15 million were awarded to 16 projects statewide.
The award was the largest local one for the purpose yet. Kingston, which hired urban forester Brent Knepper last year, is in the process of shaping its arboreal future by devising what it has termed a Forest Management Strategy.
