New full-service supermarket coming to Wawarsing in June

Investigation into town budgeting practices suggested in New Paltz

Tops Friendly Markets is set to open its doors in June at the former ShopRite site on U.S. Route 209 in Wawarsing, following a $2 million renovation. The project includes a redesigned storefront, fresh paint, upgraded landscaping, energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, expanded self-checkout stations, updated restrooms, and an improved fresh food section.

With this opening, the Ellenville/Wawarsing regains a large, full-service grocery store after ShopRite’s departure last summer.

The new store will feature a full-service meat and seafood department, a deli, and a bakery offering fresh bread, pastries, and gluten-free products from Vin-Chet’s. Additionally, it will include a floral section and an expanded selection of Kosher foods. A “Brew Market” will showcase local breweries, while a “Healthy Hydration” area will cater to health-conscious shoppers.

Customers will have access to convenient online ordering with options for pickup, delivery, and catering services. The store will also participate in the Flashfood program, which provides discounts on items nearing expiration. Sourcing from more than 500 local farmers, including several in Ulster County, Tops emphasizes local produce and goods.
