A police officer with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Police Academy is in “extremely critical” condition after sustaining an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a department spokesperson releasing the information on Tuesday.
The incident occurred inside the academy located at 144 Flatbush Ave. on the morning of March 25. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 10am.
Officials have not released additional details as notifications are still in progress. Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the response.
This was the second incident of gun-related injury in Kingston on the same day, after an unrelated shooting earlier Tuesday morning resulted in one person being wounded. That investigation is also ongoing.
Just over ten years ago, a DEP worker was murdered by a fellow employee at DEP’s midtown Kingston offices, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the killing.
