Leaking propane was to blame for what State Police have determined was a tragic accident that killed two and destroyed a home in Hurley last week.
“The primary cause was a significant amount of propane that leaked into the residence over an extended period of time,” State Police said in a statement. They did not indicate how the leak initially occurred.
Shockwaves from the explosion were felt for miles around after the Brueckner Lane home exploded at approximately 12:30pm last Wednesday. Eight fire departments fought a large blaze, after which the remains of local residents Ralph Brueckner, 75, and Cheryl Hathaway, 58 were found in the charred rubble.
The tragic incident serves as a reminder to homeowners to inspect and maintain propane systems, including checking for leaks and ensuring proper ventilation, to prevent dangerous gas buildup and potential explosions.
