The luck of the Irish was with the Ancient Order of Hibernians, sponsor of the annual Shamrock Run and St. Patrick’s Parade, held this past Sunday, March 16, as the predicted rain held off and temperatures were in the 60’s.
The run and parade began at Academy Green and made its way down Broadway to the city’s Rondout waterfront, fully embracing the spirit of the Emerald Isle.
Over 2,000 runners, including those with four paws, ran or walked 2.1 miles, with cheering spectators lining the streets. This year’s run, hosted by the Irish Cultural Center of the Hudson Valley, was dedicated to Eric Hansen and benefited both the Ulster County SPCA and the Irish Cultural Center of the Hudson Valley.
The parade showcased Irish-themed floats, lively bands, bagpipes, politicians, fire trucks, big balloons, specialty cars and much more. Among the dignitaries were grand marshal Bill Sutton, Irish princess Cadence Tuey, bearer of St. Patrick Brantley Wrixon, and the mayor of the day, Rita Geary Schabot.
