Catskills publisher revamped with new ownership after 52 years in business

Purple Mountain Press, a longstanding independent book publisher known for its focus on New York State history, has transitioned to new ownership. Four locals with backgrounds in publishing have joined forces to revitalize the press while preserving its rich legacy. The new team plans to expand the Purple Mountain catalog with new titles and reissue select out-of-print books with refreshed cover art and introductions.

Brett Barry, a producer, voice-over artist, and SUNY New Paltz lecturer, will manage orders, fulfillment, and web operations. Rebecca Rego Barry, a veteran journalist and author, will lead publicity and marketing. Carolyn Bennett, with extensive publishing and editorial experience, will oversee acquisitions and production. Lee Hudson, founder of Catskill Tri-County Historical Views, will handle editorial, design, and contracts.

Founded in 1973 by Wray and Loni Rominger in Fleischmanns, New York, Purple Mountain Press has built a reputation for publishing works covering the Catskills, Hudson Valley, Adirondacks, Lake George, and the Mohawk and Champlain Valleys. Its subjects range from Colonial history and the Revolutionary War to regional folklore, Native American culture, and the natural environment. The press has featured works by prominent authors such as Robert and Johanna Titus, Michael Kudish, Diane Galusha, Bill Birns, Carleton Mabee, Sandra Weber, and beloved local historian Alf Evers.

A celebratory launch event is scheduled to take place later this year at The Print House, the former home of Purple Mountain Press.
