Memorial Day remains a solemn tradition to honor veterans, but in the midst of an extended period of domestic peace, parades have fallen out of favor as the holiday transformed into an extended weekend of summer vacation and travel.
Add Kingston’s Memorial Day parade to the canceled list. After 75 years of hosting Memorial Day parades, the city will discontinue the tradition, Mayor Steve Noble announced in an email on Friday, Jan. 24. The decision, made in collaboration with the Kingston Veterans Association, comes as a result of declining public participation.
Instead of the parade, the Memorial Day ceremony typically held at Veterans Park in front of Kingston City Hall will be expanded. This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26. The city will continue to host a ceremony at City Hall, with further details to be provided at a later date.
