A jury in Ulster County Court has found a Schenectady man guilty on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, in connection with the fatal shooting of a Kingston resident inside his home.
Nyqwuan Monroe, 26, was convicted of murder, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon for his role in the July 27, 2023, killing of Dominique Green. Prosecutors said Monroe, along with two accomplices, forcibly entered Green’s apartment and shot him in front of his girlfriend after an escalating domestic dispute.
Following the shooting, Monroe handed the firearm to one of his accomplices, who discarded it in a wooded area behind the Barmann Avenue Apartments. Authorities later recovered the weapon, which contained Monroe’s DNA on both the gun and a shell casing found inside. Monroe and his co-defendants returned to Schenectady after the incident and were arrested the following day.
The jury, composed of six men and six women, found Monroe guilty of three counts of burglary and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. His sentencing is scheduled for March 17, where he faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
Initially, Monroe pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Jan. 2024, but later sought to withdraw his plea, claiming he had been pressured. In May, the court granted his request, leading to a full trial.
Jurors deliberated for two days before reaching a unanimous verdict. Key evidence included surveillance footage and photographic evidence showing Monroe and his accomplice, Maliek Fredericks, entering Green’s residence.
Green sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the neck, which severed his jugular vein, causing him to bleed to death. Prosecutors argued that Monroe’s actions were intentional and premeditated.
Monroe’s co-defendants, Fredericks and Shaliza Dhanraj, both accepted plea deals, reducing their charges to burglary in exchange for their testimony against Monroe. Fredericks is expected to receive a sentence of 3.5 years in prison, while Dhanraj’s sentencing details are pending.
