So far, Ulster County residents have dodged a major snowfall event this winter. But as an “arctic assault” gears up to plunge local temperatures into the 30s, 20s and teens over the coming weeks, forecasters such as Hudson Valley Weather are warning that conditions are “outstandingly favorable” for a “memorable nor’easter” in the first half of the month.
Forecasters cautioned it was too early to predict the timing, scope and size of a potential major snow event, and no major snowstorm was currently imminent. However, weather models have occasionally hinted at significant storms later in the month, including blizzard potential. While there’s a chance of light to moderate snow on Jan. 6, larger storms remain uncertain.
The extended cold snap is expected by many forecasters to last for two weeks or more, giving ample time for a major snowstorm to form.
As for the time being, locals are contending with a Wind Advisory until 10pm on Jan. 2, with gusts as high as 55 mph expected. Keep the hatches battened.
