A 69-year-old man in Highland died of smoke inhalation when a wood burning stove ignited a structure fire on North Riverside Rd., according to a press release from the New York State Police.
At about 3:16am on Dec. 25, troopers stationed in Highland responded to reports of a fire, and subsequently hailed the Highland Fire Department, Milton Fire Department, and Esopus Fire Department, which all arrived on scene to extinguish the flames.
When first responders were able to enter the residence, they found Phillip Damberg, 69, “deceased due to smoke inhalation” due to a fire caused by a wood-burning stove.
