A DWI charge was filed against Kingston city police Sergeant Eric J. VanAllen, 46, after New York State Troopers responded to a 911 call about two men sleeping in a vehicle.
At around 12:54am on Dec. 13, Troopers say they discovered VanAllen and another man asleep in a 2024 Dodge pickup truck parked at the intersection of Rt. 208 and Rt. 44/55. They were respectively in the driver’s seat and passenger’s seat.
The passenger’s name was not released by police. The arrest appeared to be excluded from the arrest blotter published by state police, which a police official described as a “clerical error”.
Police Chief Egidio Tinti said he was aware of the arrest and would be discussing possible disciplinary action at their next meeting.
In 2016, Kingston mayor Shane Gallo reacted to an anonymous letter sent to the Attorney General’s Office and the FBI which alleged VanAllen caused an accident while driving under the influence, saying “Given my own read on the letter and my discussion with the attorney general, I think it needs to be looked at carefully.”
VanAllen was arrested, transported for processing, released and is scheduled for a hearing in Town of Gardiner Court on Jan. 8, 2025.
