Full schmear ahead! Fantzye, Kingston’s brand new bagel shop, announced its grand opening will be held this Fri., November 29.
The new bakery occupies the funky triangular building at 392 Hasbrouck Ave. in Midtown Kingston, right off of Foxhall Ave., two blocks from Broadway. The facade is reminiscent of New York City’s Flatiron Building, albeit a miniaturized three-story version.
Fantzye prides itself in baking artisanal, naturally-fermented bagels, easily spotted by their characteristic glossy, blistered surface. By undergoing a slow, overnight fermentation, more complex flavors are coaxed from the yeast, enhancing the dough’s elasticity. They also show particular care for toppings, carefully curating farm-to-table ingredients.
The baking operation began in Martha’s Vineyard as a humble operation during the pandemic. Founder Elana Carlson and her team started by offering pre-ordered “bagel kits” for weekend pickups at artists’ workshops across the island.
After continuing their rapid growth into 2022, Fantzye faced a major setback when its commercial kitchen was sold late in the year. Rather than let the closure define them, the team saw an opportunity to chart a new course, relocating to the Hudson Valley to begin a fresh chapter in the Hudson Valley.
Many Kingston residents are fiercely opinionated about their choice of bagel. Heated debates are not uncommon. On one side, fans of Sunrise Bagel & Deli are devoted to their oversized, doughy carb bombs, while the B&B Bagel followers appreciate their crispier, smaller, more old-school bagel-making.
If the images on their Instagram page are any indication, Fantzye is about to give the hometown heroes some healthy competition.
