Brinley Fey of New Paltz will appear in the bright lights of Times Square on Saturday, September 7 as part of the annual National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) Times Square video presentation. The one-hour video of 500+ photographs includes children, teens and adults with down syndrome from all 50 states and 14 countries. These collective images highlight individuals with down syndrome in the most visible way on two screens in the heart of Times Square.
The photo of Fey was selected from nearly 3000 entries in the NDSS worldwide call for photos. Her photo will be shown on two jumbotron screens thanks to the support of ClearChannel Outdoor. The two screens are above Dos Caminos restaurant in Father Duffy Square. The presentation will be livestreamed on the NDSS Facebook page from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on September 7.
Teen advisory group kickoff at Elting Library
Elting Memorial Library invites teenagers and students in 6th through 12th grade to participate in its teen advisory group. The group develops and hosts creative programs throughout the school year and it’s a great way to earn community service credit. In the past it has done haunted houses, mini golf in the library stacks, Valentine’s Day cookie parties, trivia game nights and more. What they do this year is up to you! This year’s kickoff to start brainstorming will be held on Wednesday, September 11 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. There will be refreshments to help keep the ideas flowing.
For additional information, call 845-255-5030 or email Deborah Engel-Di Mauro at dengel-dimauro@eltinglibrary.org.
Save the date: Rosendale Runs half marathon to benefit Wallkill Valley Land Trust
In partnership with the Wallkill Valley Land Trust (WVLT), Shawangunk Runners will present the Rosendale Runs half marathon on October 13 at 750 Binnewater Lake Road in Rosendale.
Experience scenic views around every bend amid the Hudson Valley fall foliage. A mostly flat course on the well-groomed Wallkill Valley Rail Trail with two short sojourns off the rail trail to add a little spice and provide just enough challenge to offer a sense of accomplishment.
Rosendale provides a beautiful venue for Shawangunk Runners 6th edition of the Rosendale Runs Half Marathon. Visit the charming and quirky Village, once the home of the world-famous Rosendale Cement Company and now a thriving center of the arts.
Run across the trail that made the National Rails to Trails Conservancy’s top ten- list of most “iconic rail trails”. You will cross over the 146-year-old historic Rosendale Trestle bridge, sitting 150 feet above and extending 940 feet across the Rondout Creek. When it opened in 1872, it was the highest-span bridge in the United States. The race will take you alongside scenic lakes and through a “cave” at the Williams Lake Project. Come experience the dramatic scenery of the enchanting town of Rosendale that helped build the Brooklyn Bridge with its natural limestone cement.
All proceeds go to the Wallkill Valley Land Trust. The event has a cap of 300 starters. The registration fee is $30 and includes a T-shirt. All registrations must be completed online at bit.ly/4dQOaBB.
“This is our first race event in partnership with Shawangunk Runners on our rail trail,” WVLT executive director Christie DeBoer shared. “And we are delighted and grateful to have the professional running club, Shawangunk Runners, leading it!”
Gender-specific T-shirts are guaranteed to all who register by September 22. There will be refreshments, raffle prizes, a finisher’s medal and unique awards in all standard ten-year age groups by Christopher Regan.
