Nearly 300 Woodstockers were honored on Saturday, August 17 at the 20th annual Woodstock Volunteers Day, a celebration of the selfless individuals who continuously uplift, inspire and give back to their community. Woodstock, a town known for its deep-rooted spirit of volunteerism, is the only town in America to dedicate a day solely to honoring its volunteers. It was a full day of fun, good food, music, dancing, activities for children, raffles and awards.
Thanks to the hard work and time put in by the Woodstock Volunteers Day Committee, everything was donated, from the food to 53 raffle prizes. The members even worked that day to make sure it ran smoothly and the volunteers felt appreciated.
“This wonderful event is a great way for a town to build community spirit,” said committee member Sam Magarelli. “Volunteers Day doesn’t have to be held only in Woodstock. Appreciating all the kind, generous and community-minded people within any town helps to make the world a better place and you can have fun doing it!”
Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger attended and presented Magarelli with a certificate of appreciation for the town honoring its volunteers for 20 years.
“Being a volunteer can take many forms, but at its core, it means showing up, believing in the greater good, extending a helping hand and doing your part to leave a positive impact behind,” said Senator Michelle Hinchey. “Volunteers Day is a testament to the compassion and generosity within the Woodstock community, and I’m grateful to Woodstock Volunteers Day Committee President Cathy Magarelli and the entire Committee for organizing this wonderful event and recognizing the incredible work of all our local volunteers.”
At dusk, the Woodstock Fire Department presented its 29th annual fireworks display at Andy Lee Field.
