The cultural influence of Dutch settlers in early colonial Ulster County still can be seen in architecture, tradition, and place names. What’s been buried – literally in some cases – is the dark history of slavery they ushered in. Enslavement was not fully and formally abolished in New York State until 1827. Bearing Witness: Exploring the Legacy of Enslavement in Ulster County is a new book produced in connection with the Ulster County Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Its authors will be on hand to present their research into our area’s tragic past and sign copies of the book. The talk is free to attend, access to the museum’s exhibit is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, 12 and under free.
