What can be said about the Ulster County Fair that hasn’t been said in the last 136 years of its existence? Perhaps the fair’s most endearing quality is its consistency for well over a century. Though rides and vendors abound, local farm culture still beats at the heart of the celebration. The many luxuries of modern American life – such as spending $10 on a corn dog – are entirely undergirded by farmers’ heroic efforts to keep hundreds of millions of us fed against all odds. That’s something worth celebrating and experiencing firsthand on the local level. These cows aren’t going to pet themselves.
