President Joe Biden is a patriot, Hudson Valley congressmember Pat Ryan informed his constituents a few hours after the incumbent president announced Sunday afternoon that he wouldn’t run for another term after all.
“Delivering on his promise to be a bridge to a new generation of leaders is a fitting capstone to a life of selfless service,” Ryan wrote. “The entire nation is grateful for all that he’s done for the American people.”
Lieutenant governor Antonio Delgado and Ryan were among the first local Democrats to call on Biden to step down as a candidate after his disastrous performance in his first debate against Donald Trump.
Congressional candidate Josh Riley and county auditor March Gallagher had spoken out even earlier. County executive Jen Metzger had declined to express her opinion when asked.
With Biden’s status no longer in doubt, Ryan resumed a broadside against Trump,
“The contrast with Trump, a convicted felon who tried to overturn the 2020 election, could not be more striking,” he wrote. “Every single Republican has lined up behind him because they lack the courage and independence to put the country ahead of party and their own political ambition. They’d rather pledge fealty to a traitor than stand up for their own constituents.”
