It’s too late for most college students, but full-time residents can now head back to P&G’s for a cold one as the summer heats up. That’s because an Ulster County judge agreed to place a 30-day stay on the suspension of the liquor license, meaning that — at least for the moment — P&G’s is a watering hole once again.
That license was suspended on an emergency basis by state liquor commissioners after some 120 patrons under the age of 21 were allegedly found purchasing and consuming alcohol on the premises on March 15, leading to a mass arrest that may be the second largest in New Paltz this year. Those same commissioners declined a plea deal on April 25, which would have kept the place open and the bartenders employed, but limiting the hours of operation to keep the focus on the family restaurant experience.
When that decision was reported on May 2, attorney Joseph O’Connor advised that an article 78 petition had been filed to get the suspension lifted while discussions with the commissioners continued. That’s what has been granted: a 30-day stay on the suspension. O’Connor said when reached May 21 that the hope is to find a resolution agreeable to all parties before that stay expires.
According to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page, the hours of operation will be curtailed: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. only.
