New York State lost more than 620,000 in population from April 2020 to July 2023, according to the United States Census Bureau’s latest estimates. New York City lost about 546,000 and the inner suburban counties of Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester another 30,000.
The Hudson Valley counties offered a mixed picture, pretty much holding their own. Further upstate, where the population is sparser, many more counties lost population than gained it.
Orange County was the big winner in the Hudson Valley, recording 66,155 more people by last June. Sullivan County gained 1307 souls, Ulster County 491, Dutchess County 129, Delaware County 99, while Columbia County dropped 1090.
Don’t take these numbers too seriously. They’re not the result of actual counts, but estimates based on a variety of factors.
The neighboring states showed a mixes picture. Connecticut gained more than 11,000 people, Vermont 4000 and New Jersey less than 2000. Massachusetts lost 37,000 and Pennsylvania close to 64,000.
