Stopgap cannabis market is open for business

Once the order was paid for, a second employee unlocked the automobile parked farther back in the garage, picked the merchandise and presented it in a brown paper bag.

The popular cannabis growers showcase came and went, but there still isn’t a fully-operational shop where adults can buy products legally. Three years in, the process of licensing dealers proceeds in fits and starts, with the closest of 78 legal facilities being in Newburgh.

Village of New Paltz officials have wrangled another concession out of state regulators to help the farmers get their product to market: As of March 7, it will again be possible to pick up some edibles, carts, chillums or pre-rolled joints on Plattekill Avenue. Rather than a showcase where the various growers can talk to customers about their offerings, this time it’s just the licensed representatives of Legacy Dispensary conducting business, as these are the folks with the authority to exchange cannabis for money.

A visit on March 8 revealed a venue that is stripped down from the prior setup. Inside the former fire station garage, a lone individual sits at a card table with a credit card machine and a printout of inventory. Only debit cards are accepted, and as before, photo identification must be scanned in first. The employee was friendly, and offered recommendations based on the customer’s needs. Once the order was paid for, a second employee unlocked the automobile parked farther back in the garage, picked the merchandise and presented it in a brown paper bag.

The listed hours are Thursday and Friday 4 to 8 p.m., Saturdays noon to 6 p.m., and Sundays noon to 5 p.m. This arrangement will last through March, unless a dispensary is opened in the village sooner.

A license has been awarded to Herbal Confectionary, LLC, for the operation of a dispensary on Water Street in the former Groovy Blueberry building. Co-owner Lisa Barone declined an interview prior to opening, writing in a response email on February 19, “At this time, we are still working with the state on the applicable requirements, procedures and protocols. It is our top priority to add positive value to the direct community and our farming community in the Hudson Valley.”
