Police announce arrests in August stabbing attack

Four individuals are facing a variety of assault charges resulting from a bar fight in New Paltz over the summer, which resulted in a victim being stabbed in the chest.

According to a statement released on December 20, New Paltz detectives were able to secure indictments against four individuals after a four-month investigation. Charges were filed against Dasany Naveo, age 22 of Ellenville; Alexis Bingell-Vandunk, age 23 of Ellenville; Aaron Caraballo, age 23 of Ellenville; and Carlos Roberts, age 22 of Kingston.

The charges listed were assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor, along with felony charges of second-degree attempted gang assault, second-degree assault, and attempted assault in the first degree. Naveo was also charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, another misdemeanor. The indictments were handed down by members of a grand jury.

The press release suggests that it was a chaotic scene “outside of a local establishment” in the early hours of August 6. While uniformed officers were attempting to make an arrest for an unrelated crime, they were surrounded by a large crowd, the members of which “attempted to interfere with their arrest.” While coming to assist, another officer witnessed a four-on-one attack. According to the subsequent investigation, the fight outside of the unnamed tavern started with just one of the defendants, but the other three joined in and together they were “striking [the victim] with their fists and feet and one defendant stabbed the victim in the chest.”

After officers provided emergency first aid, they handed off care of the victim to rescue squad personnel for treatment and transport to a local hospital. The subsequent investigation yielded the indictments on December 5, and it took another two weeks to round all four suspects up. Three were sent to the county lockup to await arraignment, and the fourth was arraigned and released with electronic monitoring.

Law enforcement personnel from the Ellenville and Kingston police departments, the sheriff’s office, and the state police provided assistance.
