Saugerties students are out of their gourds about maps, geography and the oceans

Pumpkins are usually a sign that Halloween is near and ghosts and goblins will soon appear. But students in Margaret Mullen’s Grade 3 class at Mt. Marion Elementary School in Saugerties weren’t feeling scared about their next lesson using pumpkins; instead, they were busy turning these giant gourds into geography globes. Students were learning about latitude, longitude, oceans and the equator. They painted their pumpkins blue to represent the oceans and then painted on the seven continents. Students were also learning about navigation and plotting north, south, east and west using a compass. Keep up the great work, and remember that you really can have the world in the palm of your hands.

On October 14 at about 8:51 a.m., deputies responded to the report of a two-car motor vehicle accident involving a schoolbus and dumptruck on Route 9W in the Malden area of the Town of Saugerties. Upon arrival, it was determined the operator of the dumptruck suffered serious injuries and was later pronounced deceased at the scene. The schoolbus operator suffered minor injuries and was transported to HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley’s Broadway Campus in Kingston for further treatment. No children were on the schoolbus at the time of the accident.

The investigation is actively being conducted by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. The names of the parties involved will not be released at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Town of Saugerties Police Department, Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, Diaz Memorial Ambulance Service, Malden/West Camp Fire Department and the Saxton Fire Department.
