Angeloch exhibit opens at James Cox Gallery
A group of recent paintings by Woodstock artist Eric Angeloch will be featured at the James Cox Gallery from September 24 through October 22, as the gallery unveils its first one-person exhibit since the onset of COVID.
Angeloch has based this recent group of 30 paintings on the Japanese Mushin philosophy. The exhibit, titled “In the Zone Mushin No Shin,” represents a personal and spiritual journey for the Woodstock native. “This exhibition offers the first opportunity to view the result of his exploration,” James Cox noted. “We are proud to present this landmark show to the public.”
The work in this exhibit is notable for its creative use of negative space, based on the Zen notion of “no-mindness.” Angeloch explained that, working on a square format, “The upper portion of the painting is generally seen as a state of pure, flat color…while the representational aspect is confined to the lower third of the painting.” Most of the pieces in the exhibit are also enhanced with hand-applied gold leaf. Whereas open, airy space occupies the upper two-thirds of the square format, the lower third includes suggestions of stone, executed in a meticulously detailed trompe l’oeil technique and highlighted with gold leaf.
With few exceptions, most of the pieces in the exhibit were painted using just four pigments: raw umber, Naples yellow, ivory black and white. The gold leaf is laid directly onto the wet pigment in what the artist described as a “haphazard, fluid process.” As he lifts the gold leaf off the paint surface, the irregular remains become an integral part of the overall concept.
Eric Angeloch hails from a family of distinguished Woodstock artists. Both his parents, Robert Angeloch and Nancy Summers, were accomplished painters and printmakers, while his grandparents, Dudley Summers and Pauline Stone, were professional illustrators. Angeloch used an old tube of his grandfather’s cadmium red when painting the few pieces in the show that depart from his subdued palette. “Oil paint never goes bad…as long as you put the cap back on,” the artist quipped.
The public is invited to an opening reception for the artist on Friday, September 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. In keeping with current health precautions, guests are required to show proof of vaccination and photo ID. The James Cox Gallery is located at 4666 Route 212 in Willow. To view the exhibit online, visit the gallery website at www.jamescoxgallery.com. 5th annual Catskill Conquest Rally set for September 25
The fifth annual Catskill Conquest Rally will take place on September 25 at 9 a.m., beginning at the Congressman Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Visitor Center on Route 28 in Mount Tremper and continuing to Delhi. The event is open to all cars of any age.
In October of 1903, 17 American automobile manufacturers competed on the basis of reliability over an 800-mile course from Weehawken to Pittsburgh. On the first day of the Endurance Run, the cars drove up the Hudson Valley and into the Catskill Mountains, spending their first night at Pine Hill. On the second day, as they drove onto Delaware County’s dirt roads, a deluge of six inches of wind-driven rain came down and made driving a debacle. After several more days of rain and flooding, 25 of the 34 competing cars reached Pittsburgh and became known as the Mud Larks.
This year’s route from start to finish is 82 miles. In Margaretville, participants will stop at the Cauliflower Festival, visit the Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith and then end the drive in the Village of Franklin at the Franklin Railroad and Community Museum.
Of the 17 makes that participated in 1903, some fell by the wayside and others became classics, like Packard, Franklin and Pierce-Arrow. This year there is a 1932 Pierce-Arrow Club Sedan entered in honor of the three Pierce cars that ran in 1903. There are also vintage and modern sportscars and cars of every decade from the 1910s to the 2010s. This event is for the pure enjoyment of driving.
For more information, visit www.1903autorun.com. Registration is open and the fee is $100 per car.
