Many of the citizens of Saugerties learned to swim at the Saugerties beach from two Red Cross swimming instructors — Ann Bogert and June Jasienowski. During last week’s Village Board meeting, trustees recalled having learned to swim from them, and the board discussion of a proposal to name the village beach after them became nearly nostalgic.
“Anyone who grew up in Saugerties and took swimming lessons at Saugerties beach knows that that beach was synonymous with June Jasienowski and Ann Bogert,” said Mayor Bill Murphy. “Anybody who took lessons probably took them from them. I would like to propose that we dedicate Saugerties beach to them, rename it to Ann and June. If the board approves, we could have a sign made up and dedicate it sometime this summer.”
“That would be wonderful,” said trustee Jeannine Mayer. “That’s a great idea, they taught me how to swim,” said trustee Vince Buono. “Me, too; and the children,” said Mayer. “They taught me too, and what’s my nickname?” asked trustee Don Hackett. “Buoy.”
The decision to rename the beach and construct a sign sometime during the summer was unanimous.
