Notes from the New Paltz Town Board (4/21/21)

How to navigate New Paltz, from someone who never really left

Vendor dumps solar landfill bid

It may take a bit longer to realize the dream of covering the Town of New Paltz’s closed landfill with solar panels. The second vendor to make a bid on the project has declined to move forward, Supervisor Neil Bettez said at the April 15 Town Council meeting. The supervisor said that the site poses challengers for a developer. A new request for proposals is being put out, with bids due back on May 5.

Vaccination rates are high

Ulster is “one of the most heavily vaccinated counties in New York State,” New Paltz Deputy Supervisor Dan Torres announced at the April 15 Town Council meeting and it’s easier than ever to schedule appointments now. The challenge now, according to Torres, is to reach county residents “who may not watch a meeting or read the paper. If you know someone who needs help” with scheduling an appointment, “there are more vaccines than people who want them” at the moment.

Vaccines are free, and there is information on scheduling and eligibility posted at the top of the county web page, ulstercountyny.gov.

Change in Taste

The Taste of New Paltz is probably going to happen this year, but not at the county fairgrounds. That space has been taken up doling out vaccines, and thus the food-fest organizers are eyeing the Field of Dreams instead, located across the street from the fairgrounds on Libertyville Road in New Paltz. Town council members agreed to take up the request at a future meeting.

Recycling Center days to be cut, hours increased

Hours at the Town of New Paltz’s Reuse Center are going to be modified to better match when people use it. The center will still be open for 40 hours a week, but those hours will be concentrated from Wednesday through Saturday. New recycling coordinator Kris Klitzner told council members that staff members are on board with this change, which will result in the gates being opened earlier in the morning on those days.
