As Michael Moriello told neighbors at an informational meeting last October, the bid to build a housing complex on land along Route 32 south that wraps around the Belle Terre apartments in New Paltz depends on the property being annexed into the village, which has zoning laws that support a higher density of units. That annexation request has been filed at town and village offices and at their joint meeting February 4, members of both boards agreed that the lead agency for the environmental review should be the board of trustees of the village. After that review is complete, both the trustees and town councilors will need to vote in favor of annexation for it to come to pass.
Should the annexation of the nearly 60-acre parcel be approved, an application to the village planning board for the 650-bed rental development that is anticipated to serve members of the adjacent campus community would follow.
