Each year for the past 12 years, UlsterCorps, the not-for-profit agency that matches local volunteers with good causes in need of their services, has marked Martin Luther King Day with a gala event called Celebration of Service. With public gatherings currently hazardous to public health, it looked as if this well-loved tradition of volunteer recognition might not be able to happen in 2020.
Happily, UlsterCorps has reshaped the Celebration as a drive-through event, taking place in the parking lot of the Rosendale Recreation Center on Saturday, January 16 from noon to 2 p.m. The Rosendale Town Board gave the event its blessing at its December 9 meeting.
Free to anyone who has done volunteer work of any kind in Ulster County during the past year, the festivities will consist of a goodie bag handed through the car window. Participants are asked to wear a mask upon arrival, and to preregister by January 11 by calling or texting (845) 481-0331 or e-mailing register@ulstercorps.org.
