Kingston lawmakers voted to recommend rezoning multiple properties at Golden Hill and Lawton Park at its October 6 meeting, paving the way for new housing developments.
The resolution to refer the request for rezoning of multiple properties at these two locations to the planning board was passed 9-0. The rezoning would allow these properties to be zoned as multiple residences (R-6) instead of single residence (RRR). This next step in the rezoning process will allow for comments from the city and county planning boards.
“It is my belief that this rezoning is appropriate in that the present zone is not suitable for the parcels, in that is overly restrictive and discourages development and that it is in the best interests of the city to change the zone as suggested,” said mayor Steve Noble in a letter.
“This is the first step in the rezoning process,” said alderman Jeffrey Ventura Morell.
The former county jail at Golden Hill was transferred in August to the Ulster County Housing Development Corporation, a newly created body evaluating proposals for affordable housing developments submitted by private developers earlier this year. At a public hearing in mid-August, some neighbors were in opposition of the developments at this location.
The two nearby Lawton Park parcels are privately owned. Both are located off Route 32, also known as Boulevard.
The Laws and Rules Committee will hold a public hearing on October 13 at 7 p.m. to allow for further discussion regarding the rezoning.
