Saugerties Little League to honor coaches on opening day

The Saugerties Little League will honor longtime coaches Joe Martin and Jim Speirs by naming field #2 at Cantine in their honor on Saturday, April 28 during opening day ceremonies.

Joe Martin coached for the league from 1977 to 2016. His teams won 15 league titles, including a 46-game winning streak that spanned the 2006 to 2009 seasons. He was also a part of 15 district championships.

Jim Speirs started coaching in 1979, assisting Joe with the Pirates until 1983. He returned with Joe in 1987 and branched off to run the Dodgers and later the Giants, winning three league titles each with both squads. He coached 12 seasons of fall baseball and was the driving force behind open Saturday and Sunday practices that he still runs today.

Both men have served on the Little League board over the years and have coached local basketball in the SAA and travel programs.
