Chief: Heroin use in Saugerties not increasing

heroin SQDespite some recent incidents, Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra says the community does not have a growing heroin problem.

“In the last few years I’ve been here, it’s stayed the same,” Sinagra said. “Arrest-wise, I don’t see an increase here in Saugerties.”

On Sept. 10, a Saugerties officer resuscitated a 45-year-old man on Burt Street who had overdosed on heroin. Officer Jorge Castagnola administered Narcan to the man and reversed the effects of the overdose. The man then became combative, was arrested and taken to Kingston Hospital for treatment.

Also on Sept. 10, the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement and Narcotics Team (URGENT) arrested two in the area of Route 9W and Sugar Maple Road for heroin sales. Dharma J. Munoz, 22, and Jenna D. Neglia, 20, both of Saugerties, were charged with two counts of felony criminal sale of a controlled substance and two counts of felony criminal possession of a controlled substance.
