Supervisor rematch in 2013?

Greg & Kelly HZTIs Greg Helsmoortel planning to run for Saugerties supervisor? He isn’t saying, though reportedly he has said he is considering a run. However, supporters say they expect him to run.

“Greg would be our number one choice to run for Supervisor,” said Michael Harkavy, the Saugerties Democratic Committee chairman. “We have another good person interested in running, but Greg would be at the top of our list.”

While Helsmoortel is registered as belonging to no party, his support came from Democrats in recent elections.

“He is running,” said Councilman Bruce Leighton, who would definitely support Helsmoortel. “It would be nice to get back to a state of normalcy. You can say what you want about Greg, but he was a good supervisor and he always kept the board informed. Kelly [Myers] doesn’t share information with all the board members.”

Councilman Fred Costello said he has heard Helsmoortel was interested, but he would not want to speak for him. Helsmoortel served six terms as supervisor before being defeated by Kelly Myers in the November 2011 election. Several attempts to reach Helsmoortel were unsuccessful.
