The handmade and functional blends with the whimsical and imaginative at the second annual Summer DIY Craft Fair, held this Saturday, September 8 at the Cornell Street Studios, located near the railroad tracks in Midtown Kingston. Held in collaboration with Art Riot, a collective of crafters who recently opened a shop in Uptown Kingston, the Fair will feature more than 30 craftspeople ranging from jewelers to knitters to ceramists to toy- and candlemakers to handbag-stitchers.
Organizer Renee Darmstadt described many of the items as “functional art.” “Some of the crafters make their own art, such as knitted scenes,” she said.
The family-friendly event, which is free, will also offer face-painting for the kids, a Zumba demonstration by the resident expert and the opportunity to make your own hula-hoop. Musical entertainment will be provided by Mr. Oh! which Darmstadt described as “gunk rock: New Age and vintage-inspired,” and Skeye, a singer/songwriter couple consisting of a guitarist and vocalist. There will also be a display of artwork and photographs.
The Summer DIY Craft Fair will be held on September 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cornell Street Studios, located at 168 Cornell Street in Kingston. Admission is free. Visit www.facebook.com/events/423508681034152 for more information.
