Where to donate in Saugerties

With the poor economy and a jobless rate of more than 8 percent, local organizations that help the needy need a little extra help to make sure their clients make it through the holidays and the cold months beyond.

The following is an admittedly incomplete list of local organizations that accept donations for the less fortunate. If you know of any other groups that should be added, contact SaugertiesTimes@gmail.com

Family of Woodstock

Operates homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and aids families in need, with locations in Woodstock, Kingston, and Ellenville. They’re looking for new, unwrapped toys for children up to age 18. To help out, call Amy at 331-7080, ext. 141.

Saugerties Animal Shelter

The shelter operates a Christmas pet food drive for families that have a tough time feeding their pets, said local animal control officer Marie Post, who operates the shelter. The Four Paws Pet Food Pantry receives support from school children from Cahill Elementary School and St. Mary’s of the Snow, Post said. Each year during the holiday season, the school kids collect toys, food, and blankets for the dogs and cats that are at the shelter.

To donate pet food or money, call 246-6211. Make checks out to the Saugerties Animal Shelter and mail to the town of Saugerties in care of Marie Post at 4 High Street, Saugerties, NY 12477.

The Well

The Saugerties Area Council of Churches’ thrift shop at 80-84 Partition St. is open Wednesday through Saturday and offers very inexpensive clothes, toys, and household items. There are also some free items as well. Each year, as the weather gets colder, The Well is always looking for warm clothes, especially coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and mittens. Donations of clothing should be dropped off during operating hours. For more information, contact Karen Wurzel at 246-5811.
