The family that plays together

Musical husband-and-wife partnerships rarely survive the rigors of the road, and as recent news from the Sonic Youth camp showed, even having faith in a decades-long couple like Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon is no ironclad guarantee. Well, thank goodness for Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, because they’re still making it work both on- and offstage.

This Sunday, October 23, the Tedeschi Trucks Band stops at Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC) in Kingston in a show presented by the Bardavon and sponsored by WDST. The relative intimacy of the UPAC stage should turn the large group and its mix of blues, rock, world music, jazz and gospel into an out-and-out party.

Renowned musicians and performers in their own right, singer/guitarist Tedeschi and guitarist Trucks have between them a sterling pedigree that only serves to make their live shows as dual leaders of their own band all the more special. The tour has something of a family feel, at least in the sense of comfort and familiarity that the musicians share. After all, while they’ve continued working on their own careers, Tedeschi and Trucks are only touring together for the time being, allowing them simultaneously to co-parent their children. That focus has allowed the 11-member band to gel naturally, as heard on their debut album Revelator.

“I’m really looking forward to hitting the road and letting things grow until each show feels like an event,” said Trucks. ”It’s nice having all these new songs, but also having that looseness and spontaneity that comes with a great group of musicians. There are few bands that do that: hold onto that element of surprise. One moment could be a train wreck, but the next, it’s church.”

Tickets for the Tedeschi Trucks Band are $75 for Gold Circle seating, $50 general admission, $45 for Bardavon members and $40 for the upper balcony. For more information, visit www.bardavon.org and www.ticketmaster.com.
