Stewart P. Glenn of Gardiner, NY, passed away at the age of 79 on June 21, 2025.

Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on July 29, 1945, he was the son of the late Marjorie Lewis Glenn and Stewart Parks Glenn.  Stewart graduated from New Paltz High School in New Paltz, NY in 1963 and from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA in 1967, with a BA in Political Science.  While at Dickinson, he served as the president of the Student Senate and as permanent president of the senior class.  After college, he served for four years as an officer in the United States Navy.  In 1974, Stewart graduated from Union University, Albany Law School, where he was a member of the Albany Law Review.  He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1975.  He was an Accredited Estate Planner as recognized by the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils and was a practicing attorney for 50 years in Newburgh, NY.

Stewart exemplified an unwavering dedication to his family and community.  He loved being an attorney and enjoyed helping and working with his clients puzzling through legal and personal issues to obtain a fair and positive outcome.  He was a member of the following professional organizations:

  • The American Bar Association;
  • The New York Bar Association;
  • The Orange County Bar Association;
  • The New York Women’s Bar Association;
  • The Property and Probate Section of the American Bar Association;
  • The Trust and Estates Section of the New York Bar Association;
  • The Real Property Section of the New York Bar Association;
  • The Elder Law Section of the New York Bar Association;
  • The Hudson Valley Estate Planning Council, of which he was a board member, past secretary, past treasurer, past vice-president and past president. He was also the co-chair of the inaugural Estate Planning Day, a public awareness and education program, held at SUNY New Paltz in the fall of 2007 and a similar program in October 2009;
  • The National Association of Estate Planners and Councils; and
  • The National Association of Tax Professionals.

Beyond his professional roles, Stewart strongly believed in community service and spent his life fulfilling that belief.  Over the years he served:

  • as a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, NY, for 10 years;
  • on the Board of the Amos and Sarah Holden Home – an adult home in the City of Newburgh for 30 years- as corporate secretary for most of that time;
  • for 30 years as a board member, member of the executive committee and chairman of the board of the Eastern Orange Chamber of Commerce, which is now part of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce of which he was an emeritus member;
  • as a member of the city of Newburgh Zoning Board of Appeals for 14 years;
  • as a member of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the capital campaign for the Grace United Methodist Church in Newburgh, NY;
  • as a member of the board, corporate secretary and member of the executive committee of the Huguenot Historical Society, New Paltz, NY;
  • on the New Paltz Community Improvement Team and as co-chair of the New York Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway Project for Main Street in New Paltz, NY;
  • on the Clean Sweep Committee of the New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce;
  • as a member of the troop committee of Boy Scout Troop 27 in the Town of Newburgh;
  • as a youth soccer coach in Newburgh;
  • on the Newburgh 2000 Committee, which raised the funds needed to publish the Village of Newburgh 2000 commemorative book celebrating Newburgh’s 200th anniversary as a municipality;
  • as an elected board member for the Village of New Paltz;
  • as an active member of the Paltz Club, a men’s group for which he served as past vice-president, president and current co-secretary.
  • as a member of the board and corporate secretary of the New Paltz Community Foundation.

Stewart received numerous community service awards including:

  • the 2009 Orange County Bar Association annual Outstanding Service Award;
  • the Man of the Year Service Award from the Salvation Army of Newburgh;
  • local Distinguished Service Award from the Newburgh Jaycees of which he was past president 
  • recognition by the New York State Jaycees as one of 7 outstanding New Yorkers.  
  • awarded honorary title of JCI Senator by the US JCI Senate.

Stewart earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a teenager and continued to follow the Boy Scout Oath and Law throughout adulthood.  His clients and friends knew he always had their best interests at heart.  His guidance was sought often and relied upon by many over the years.  He had an absolute commitment to staying at the top of his profession.  He strived to have a meticulous command of the law and practiced with absolute honesty, integrity and fairness in matters large and small.  

Stewart was devoted to the values and principles of our democracy.  He read extensively about our country’s history and politics and was known for gifting books that contained what he felt was valuable information to people from all walks of life. Stewart was an avid reader in general and often kept multiple copies of his favorite titles.  

The music of the 50’s and 60’s was of particular interest to Stewart.  He also loved to dance and enjoyed taking ballroom dance lessons.  He looked forward to any event where there was the opportunity to dance.  Stewart will be remembered for his love of talking to people and his desire to discover something they had in common.  He was a gift giver and was always coming up with ideas of something he just had to find to present to someone.  His calm manner and sense of humor were always evident.

Stewart is survived by his wife, Eileen McKenna Gulbrandsen Glenn, and his sons, Jeffrey Glenn of Ridgefield CT, and Jason Glenn (Sally) of Annandale, VA. He is also survived by Eileen’s children: Jennifer Gulbrandsen Ruggiero (Michael) of Bryn Mawr, PA, and Brian Gulbrandsen (Marianne) of Pennington, NJ; and 7 grandchildren: Alexander Glenn, Andrew Glenn, Sydney Glenn, Olivia Ruggiero, Stella Ruggiero, Patrick Gulbrandsen and Connor Gulbrandsen.

Stewart’s memory can best be honored by finding ways to help in your community.  Stewart was deeply committed to standing up for his beliefs and treating people with kindness and respect.
