Bearsville – Stephen B. Young, 78, of Bearsville, New York, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 4, 2021. He was born on April 21, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Louis and Alice (Klein) Young.

Steve started practicing medicine in Woodstock, NY in the 1970s. His love of music and medicine crossed paths when he was a doctor at the Woodstock festival. He was also called the “Hippie Doctor” because he bartered his services and performed many home births, including all three of his children. He went on to become a Urogynecologist at the University of Massachusetts and founded the Urogynecology Department in 1990. While at UMASS he was chairman of his division, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and president of two prestigious national medical societies, the Society of Gyncological Surgeons and the American Urogynecologic Society. When he returned to Woodstock, he worked as a surgeon at Northern Dutchess Hospital. After his retirement he discovered a passion for drawing, becoming very prolific. He also loved dogs, food, poetry, and working on his land.

He is survived by his wife Beverly Traum and dog, Dandelion, children Sarah (Young) Gruber and husband Matthew, Ezekiel Young, and Ray Young and wife Jennifer DeClue. Grandchildren include Eliana Gallo, Mia Gruber, August Young, and Lucian Young. Other family members are his cousin Stuart Sager, brother Allan Young, Nomi Weiss-Laxer, and other nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements are under the guidance of the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home Inc. 27 Smith Avenue, Kingston www.jvleahyfh.com. He requested his ashes be sprinkled at Magic Meadow, Omega, and on his land.
