Ronald Emil Hicinbothem, 80, of Shokan, NY, passed peacefully on April 26, 2025 surrounded by his family.
He was born October 4, 1944, the third and youngest son of Grace Graham Hicinbothem and Emil Hicinbothem of Pleasantville, NY.
Ron was a well-known illustrator and avid golfer. Ron’s artistic career spanned decades, with works including book covers, magazine illustrations, and paintings. His early career began in the U.S. Army serving from 1966-1968, working as an Army illustrator. He continued on at West Point and Stewart Army Air Force Base in Newburgh, NY. He then began the next phase of his career working for book publishers and magazines in Manhattan such as Field & Stream, Golf Digest, and Golf Magazine to name a few. Fun fact, Ron illustrated the first issue of High Times magazine, unaware of the type of publication it was. He also worked as a commercial illustrator for 15 of the top advertising agencies in NYC. After retiring, he continued painting for private collectors throughout the country.
You cannot think of Ron without mentioning golf. Ron joined Woodstock Golf Club in the late ‘70s and became Board Vice President shortly thereafter, where he remained serving until his death. His list of accolades and prizes are too numerous to mention, but here are some highlights: he has shot 3 holes-in-one (1 at Wiltwyck, 1 at Woodstock Golf Club on the 4th hole, and 1 at the Boy Scout Shoot Out at Alapaha). He has won (in no particular order): a Club Championship, Player of the Year, Lowest Gross Score, Points Champion, Hutch Gross Champion, Flight Champion, Net Winner, Senior League Champion, and Golf Club Co-Player of the Year.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Karen LoRe Hicinbothem; his two daughters, Laurie and Tara; three grandchildren, Arianna, Andrew, and Taylor; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Richard.
Per his request he will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
