Robin (Robert) Cantine age 79, died on October 8 after a long struggle with head and neck cancer. He died at home in Woodstock with the support and help of Hudson Valley Hospice, his loving family and devoted caring friends.
Born in New York City, Robin grew up in Woodstock with his parents Robert L Cantine Sr and Susan Chaplin Cantine. Robin also treasured the love and guidance of his dear grandparents Jo Cantine and Tode. At the age of 12 Robin’s sister Jane Cantine Steinberg of Hopewell Junction was born. They enjoyed a very loving relationship throughout his life. When Robin was age 22 his son Eric Cantine was born. They also shared a very loving relationship. Eric now lives in Albany.
Robin married his wife Patricia Brescia and they were joyfully together for 27 years. He had the wonderful experience of being “RARA” to six grandchildren and a loving stepfather to Gabriel and Michael Archdeacon. Grandchildren: Angelo, Eliana and Luciano Archdeacon of Brookfield, Vermont and River Archdeacon and his siblings Hazel and Wilder of Glenford. A happy marriage and family life were very precious for Robin.
He grew up with his Cantine cousins: Peter, Rennie, and Alex Cantine; and Toni Weidenbacker all of Woodstock. Robin was a dear uncle to Marisa Cascarino and her husband Anthony, and Gregory Steinberg; and also a great uncle to Nicholas and Nolan Cascarino of Hopewell Junction.
Robin deeply loved nature and enjoyed working often outdoors as a carpenter and builder. After his first bout with Head and Neck cancer while living in El Rito NM in 2004, Robin attended college at UNM Community College in El Rito. As a student in Spanish Colonial Furniture Making, he excelled at his craft and made several beautiful pieces.
In 1991, Robin began to recover from Substance Abuse and he celebrated 34 years “clean and sober” in March of 2024. In his early days of recovery he found his spiritual practice as a Sun Dancer and danced in the ceremonies for 3 decades. A very wise, kind and generous man, Robin helped many people in recovery and served his community with kindness, humility and generosity. He will be greatly missed by so many who loved him dearly.
