Nina Maudie Edelman

Nina Maudie Edelman, born October 22, 1972 in Kingston, New York died January 12, 2025 in Georgetown, Delaware. After a long and painful battle with multiple physical and mental disorders, Nina found her suffering unbearable and she took her own life.

Nina is survived by her father Robert Edelman (Rosalind Eichenstein); sister Susan Edelman Houlihan (Patrick and two children); brother Benjamin Edelman (Suzanne and four children); and preceded in death by her mother Diana Squires Edelman.

Known as Maudie by the family, she will be dearly missed. She was the most creative soul we knew. A self-taught piano player, she created hundreds of songs coined “Nina’s Originals” starting at a young age and throughout her life. Music was a very important means of communicating with others. She also had a gift for making exquisite handmade cards and sold shirts with her whimsical artwork as well. An exceptionally private person, Nina had no end to the love and affection she shared with many pets over the years, as she was a pet sitter that stole the hearts of many lucky dogs, cats and even bunnies. She also was an outstanding writer and editor, capable of crafting art with eloquent words and perfect grammar.

Nina grew up in Woodstock, NY, attended SUNY Oswego and graduated with a Bachelor of Music. She then traveled the world solo for two years where adventures abound. She was then accepted to the esteemed Berkley School of Music in Boston, MA where she received a scholarship for attendance. After living in the city, she decided to work on a cowboy ranch in rural Idaho where she met Eric Soord, who understood and cared about her. She moved to Houston, TX with him and resided there earning her Personal Trainer Certificate where she helped many clients. Nina then moved back to New York and enjoyed living alone in a small cabin along a stream in Boiceville. She then moved between many homes, pet and house sitting in the Mid-Atlantic and editing on the side.

Despite great effort to help Nina, she led an isolated life where, we fear, many demons haunted her. The physical pain of living with Ehler Danlos Syndrome, chronic fatigue, migraines, mitral valve prolapse which required open heart surgery – these were all too much to bear. Her devout religion and relationship with the Lord brought her solace and comfort through it all, and for that, we are grateful.

In the end, perhaps we must realize we do not have the ability to control another’s decision. Suicide is an illness and with any sickness, we can love someone and still not be able to save them.

In lieu of flowers, please reach out to your friends and family that may be suffering in silence. Make deep connections with your loved ones and value mental health and healing by getting professional help early.

A memorial service will be held in October 2025 for our family to honor Maudie and say goodbye with love and deep mourning in our hearts.
