It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David F. Segal, our beloved Chair Emeritus of Maverick Concerts. David died peacefully on March 31, 2023 at age 79 after a short illness.
David was a remarkable man who lived a full and rich life as a theatrical lighting designer, a music lover, and a devoted board member and Chair of Maverick Concerts. He was a passionate supporter of the oldest continuous summer chamber music festival in America. He joined the board in 1998 and became the Chair in 2012 and Chair Emeritus in 2016. He was instrumental in raising funds, attracting audiences, and enhancing the artistic quality of the festival. He loved the historic concert hall and its acoustics, and he hosted legendary after-concert parties at his beautiful Woodstock home. He was exuberant, enthusiastic, inclusive, imaginative, generous, and welcoming. He made everyone feel valued and appreciated.
David also had a successful career as a theatrical lighting designer, with numerous plays and musicals on and off-Broadway and at every major regional theater in America. He worked on such memorable productions as a Broadway revival of Damn Yankees and O Calcutta!, and toured with Marlene Dietrich. He was known for his creativity, professionalism, and flair.
David will be dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the Maverick community. He is survived by his niece Jennifer Herman and his cousin Larry Blumberg, who cared for him in his last weeks, and many other relatives and admirers. Maverick Concerts will dedicate the July 9th concert by the Miró Quartet in memory of David.
For those who may wish to make a donation in David’s memory, the family suggests donations to Maverick Concerts.
