Clarence E. “Peanuts” Gardner

SAUGERTIES… Clarence E. “Peanuts” Gardner, 95, of Lodge Rd. died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at the Green Meadow Nursing Home in Catskill. Born December 27, 1925 in Cementon he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Gardner. A lifetime area resident he served in the US Navy during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge he was employed at Alpha Portland Cement Co. in Cementon for 35 years retiring in 1981.

Active in the community is a under statement. His list of community activities he was very proud of are the following: he was a Past Commander and Life Member of the Saugerties American Legion Post #72, a Past Commander for ten years and treasurer for 12 years of the VFW Post #5034, Past Fire Chief and Charter Member of the Malden-West Camp Fire Co., a Charter Member, Past Exalted Ruler and Trustee of the Saugerties Elks Lodge #2574, former player in the Saugerties Dartball League, Saugerties Softball League on teams including Ted’s Esso and Malden-West Camp Fire Co., and for 17 years he was a manager of the Tigers in the Saugerties Little League. He was a charter member of the Algonquin Bowman’s Club, the Saugerties Fish and Game Club and the NRA where he was a hunter safety instructor for over 45 years and was inducted into the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame. Clarence served on the Saugerties Town Board as a Town Councilman and was on the board of directors of the Eastern View Cemetery in West Camp.

Predeceased by his wife, Martha in 2014 and his siblings: Marie Collier, Charles and Robert Gardner. Survivors include three daughters: Lorraine (Ed) Bishop of Lake Katrine, Elaine Gardner of Catskill and Nancy Kilmer of Ulster Park. A son, Edward (Judy) Gardner of Saugerties, a brother, John (Alma) Gardner of Florida, 8 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

His Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts. Burial with military honors will be held in Trinity Cemetery. Friends will be received Wednesday 2:00 – 4:00 PM. Face coverings must be worn and social distancing may limit capacity. Family suggests donations in his memory be made to the VFW Post #5034, 30 John St., Saugerties.
